VPS is short for Virtual Private Server. In order to understand how VPS works, you first need to know how a server works. A server is a dedicated computer configured to serve applications, most commonly used to serve websites and email. A VPS, is a virtual server in which runs and operates as it's own computer/machine, yet is just using partial resources of a "main" server. All VPS on a machine are seperate and run entirely on an individual basis. The only thing linking them together is the sharing of hardware resources. This is done by allocating a certain amount of RAM (memory), CPU processing power, and harddrive space to each VPS. Although you are running your own operating system, completely independent of all other VPS, you will be sharing the same hardware which allows for a competition for bursting. The technology in which VPS are created is solely based on SWSoft's Virtuozzo. It provides us the ability to allocate resources to several VPS. VPS are such a revolutionary technology that it is able to provide server independence yet at an affordable price.
A VPS is good for many types of situations, however it is also a draw back for many. A VPS is good for isolation of shared services (ie, email, webhosting, etc.). It provides the ability to customize your webhosting and allowing you to install additional software not allowed on our Shared servers. However, it is not middle ground between shared hosting and dedicated servers. What this means is that if a site you are planning to host will recieve abnormal ammounts of traffic or you plan to utilize alot of resources, then a VPS is not for you. A VPS does in fact provide less physical resources than a shared server. Unlike a shared server where everyone shares the same software on the same hardware, a VPS is the purchasing of dedicated resources (in partial of the entire server).
